For an artist who launched in early 2011, it seems bizarre that Melbourne-via-Adelaide rapper Allday has only just released his debut album. Having built up a large fan base via the release of multiple singles, mixtapes, home-made music videos and his positive and humorous outlook on life, Startup Cult is one of the most anticipated Australian albums of 2014. But does it live up to all the hype and expectation that surrounds it. Allday does not have a perfect voice, but it’s a voice that is imperfectly great to suit his unique style – similar to Liam Gallagher of Oasis, who has one of the most nasal voices in the music industry but is the vocalist of one of the biggest bands of all time. His unusual Australian-mixed-with-British accent allows him to stand out from the rap crowd.
Startup Cult keeps a relaxed vibe using basic drum beats and predominantly electronic instrumentation, with Allday rapping overtop and occasionally singing; nothing too upbeat or urgent. This also means that his vocals are relaxed, refining his style to be more carefree rather than aggressive and activist-like. Many of the 15 songs have a lot of potential to perform well as single releases. Despite some songs lacking lyrical depth, the hooks are catchy and memorable, two components to creating a hit song. Startup Cult is an almost perfect album that has the potential to launch Allday’s career in the footsteps of successful Australian rappers such as 360 and Illy.
Allday, along with other underground Australian rappers, are paving the direction of the future in Australian hip hop, resurrecting the genre into a youthful, thriving and talented scene. Even if you are not a particular fan of rap music, you won’t be disappointed by wandering over to Allday’s Facebook page and having a laugh at some of his crazy adventures.
